"linux" Wikipedia (via DBPedia)

Linux is a generic term referring to Unix-like graphical user interface (GUI) based computer operating systems based on the Linux kernel. Their development is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaboration; typically all the underlying source code can be used, freely modified, and redistributed, both commercially and non-commercially, by anyone under licenses such as the GNU General Public License. Linux can be installed on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from embedded devices such as mobile phones, smartphones and wristwatches to mainframes and supercomputers. Linux is predominantly known for its use in servers; in 2007 Linux's overall share of the server market was estimated at 12.7%, while a 2008 estimate suggested that 60% of all web servers ran Linux. Most desktop computers run either Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows, with Linux having only 1–2% of the desktop market. However, desktop use of Linux has become increasingly popular in recent years, partly owing to the popular Ubuntu distribution and the emergence of netbooks and smartbooks. Typically Linux is packaged in a format known as a Linux distribution for desktop and server use. Linux distributions include the Linux kernel and all of the supporting software required to run a complete system, such as utilities and libraries, the X Window System, the GNOME and KDE desktop environments, and the Apache HTTP Server. Commonly-used applications with desktop Linux systems include the Mozilla Firefox web-browser and the OpenOffice. org office application suite. The name "Linux" comes from the Linux kernel, originally written in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. The main supporting Userland in the form of system tools and libraries from the GNU Project (announced in 1983 by Richard Stallman) is the basis for the Free Software Foundation's preferred name GNU/Linux.

Ubuntu is a very popular Linux distro. It is simple to use, and it is also very stable. Go to Ubuntu.com and download an ISO file. Make sure to choose the right ISO file for your processor. Also, download PowerISO (also free) to burn the ISO file correctly onto a CD disc. Burn the ISO file using PowerISO. Get the disc, insert it into the CD drive, and restart the computer. When it restarts, go to the boot menu, and select the CD drive to boot from CD. After Ubuntu boots, select "INSTALL." The installation wizard is very simple.

Hi, I like openSUSE. Here r my reasons: 1. Very stable with less bugs compared to other systems like ubuntu. 2. Its the only linux system which is as polished as Mac OS X or Windows. 3. It has excellent documentation. 4. It looks good by default 5. Its very easy to use and has a GUI for everything unlike other Linux systems. 6. Hardware support is excellent in all. 7. Great community support as well. 8. Since openSUSE started the compiz fusion project which r the desktop effects then they have the latest ones on it. 9. Novell which is openSUSE's sponsors have a deal with Microsoft so there is better compatibility of file formats and it is the only Linux system which can open .docx files and stuff. 10. All the best and latest software is on it, and its very easy to maintain. OpenSUSE is perfect for a new user as well as old ones. Good Luck!

Linux truly is a wonderful operating system! If I'm using a PC, I greatly prefer using it to Windows. It's much more stable, secure, etc. But you already knew that. =] Personally, I would suggest you start out with OpenSuSE. It's easy to use, yet it is very powerful. Its installer is also pretty easy. I recommend that because a lot of businesses that run Linux on their client systems use SuSE (the only difference between that and OpenSuSE is that SuSE contains closed-source programs; therefore, you have to pay for that distro). I hope this helps! Good luck!

All websites today currently run on either a Windows web server or a Linux-based server. The vast majority of websites run on a Linux-based platform as Linux has a strong reputation for security and web server performance. With standard (static) HTML-based websites, the web hosting platform doesn't make much difference. When it does make a difference, however, is when the website uses a dynamic scripting technology such as ASP (A Microsoft based technology), or PHP / PERL (Linux based technologies). A Windows-based hosting solution will run a Microsoft Windows server with IIS (Internet Information Server), and is necessary to run an ASP / ASP.NET scripted website. A Linux-based platform is typically used for PHP, Perl, and most other types of websites. Basically, unless your website uses ASP (pages ending in the .asp extention), Windows hosting is not necessary. As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them. You can reach reviews about this web hosting provider and its latest DISCOUNT COUPONS at: http://www.threehosts.com/reviews/1st Only $3.95 /month (with discount coupon) BH is compatible with Dreamweaver, just refer to: http://www.threehosts.com/publish/dreamweaver.html ******IMPORTANT******** * This service was awarded the “Best Web Hosting OF The Year”. ***************************** Hope thi helps.
