The Republic of Zaire was the name of the present Democratic Republic of the Congo between 27 October 1971 and 17 May 1997. The name of Zaire derives from the Portuguese: Zaire, itself an adaptation of the Kongo word nzere or nzadi, or "the river that swallows all rivers". Known as the Belgian Congo up until its independence in June 1960, unrest and rebellion plagued the new government until 1965, when Lieutenant General Joseph-Désiré Mobutu, by then commander-in-chief of the national army, seized control of the country and declared himself president for five years during what is now called the Congo Crisis. Mobutu quickly consolidated his power and was elected unopposed as president in 1970.

what they should do with all those countries....cut them off and make them fend for themselves...... it is a great motivator to be left out in the cold and to have to do for yourself instead of having everyone give you everything. as long as we keep propping these backward as*s countries up, they will have no incentive or motivation to do anything for themselves

Even at present gold prices (which have been driven up by the Fed's low rates and the various bailouts and resulting deficits), if you broke up the leader's palace and distributed the gold to the masses, they'd still be poor. America is a former colony as well. So is Canada. Singapore. The rich countries of the world are rich because their governments allow their citizens a wide degree of economic liberty. The poor countries of the world are poor because their governments allow their citizens a narrow degree of economic liberty. The correlation between economic liberty and economic well-being is much greater than the correlation between CO2 and temperatures, yet lefties believe the latter shows causation while the former does not. Curious....

Civil Unrest/Political Tension We advise you to reconsider your need to travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo because of widespread lawlessness and the potential for civil unrest. The situation is unpredictable and could deteriorate at short notice. If you do decide to travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, you should exercise extreme caution. Clashes between various armed local groups and government forces are common in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There are numerous government security forces stationed in urban areas, including Kinshasa. Local authorities, including the police, often have limited or no capacity to control the situation or provide assistance. You should avoid all civil disturbances, protests or demonstrations because they may turn violent. Eastern, north-eastern and Bas-Congo areas: We strongly advise you not to travel to the eastern, north-eastern and Bas-Congo areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including North and South Kivu Provinces and the Ituri district of Orientale Province, because of the dangerous and unstable security situation and lawlessness throughout these regions. Inter-factional fighting occurs in these areas and in the Katanga and Maniema provinces. Rebel forces control parts of the east and north of the country. On 26 October 2008, heavy fighting broke out near the town of Goma in North Kivu Province. A ceasefire has been declared but the situation remains volatile and could deteriorate without warning. Tens of thousands have been displaced by the latest violence. Several local NGOs have suspended or reduced operations. Travellers in the North and South Kivu Provinces should stay in close contact with the Their Embassy in Kinshasa for the latest developments on the ground. Crime There is a very high level of crime throughout the Democratic Republic of the Congo and risks increase after dark. You should avoid all travel after dark. Arbitrary arrests of foreigners by security authorities who demand payment for release are common. Vehicle thefts, burglaries and carjackings are common. Violent robbery, particularly of foreigners, is common, especially in Kinshasa. You should avoid displaying valuables and cash. When driving, keep doors locked and windows closed at all times. You should not drive off the main thoroughfares or park your vehicle in unsupervised areas. Walking alone in the capital, including in daylight hours, is dangerous. Local Travel Kinshasa’s main airport (Ndjili International Airport) and ferry terminal can close at short notice. Check with your tour operator before travelling. If travelling by air to Kinshasa, we strongly recommend that you arrange to be met on arrival at the airport. Recent civil unrest has resulted in the cancellation of some flights to Kinshasa. Local immigration and customs procedures at Kinshasa Airport are difficult and you may need assistance from people familiar with requirements. There is no reliable public transport. Taxis are only reliable from some major hotels. Driving in the Democratic Republic of the Congo can be dangerous because of aggressive driving practices and low driving standards. Most roads are in poor condition with insufficient or non-existent signage and lighting. For further advice, see our bulletin on Overseas Road Safety. Military and police roadblocks are common throughout the country, including in Kinshasa, particularly after dark. They may not be clearly marked. You may be required to show identification documents, including car registration and ownership papers. There are risks involved in travelling by ferry or boat. Many are overloaded, lack necessary lifesaving equipment and are not sea worthy. Airline Safety Passengers on international flights to and from UK are only allowed to carry a small amount of liquids (including aerosols and gels) in their carry-on baggage. If you have concerns about the safety standards of a particular airline or aircraft, we recommend you research the airline or aircraft through organisations such as Civil Aviation Safety Authority and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government has published fact sheets on security for air travellers. When staff at UK overseas missions are advised not to use particular airlines due to safety concerns this will be included in travel advice. The European Union (EU) has published a list of airlines that are subject to operating bans or restrictions within the EU. The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) through its foreign assessment program focuses on a country's ability, not the individual airline, to adhere to international standards and recommended practices for aircraft operations and maintenance established by ICAO. Natural Disasters, Severe Weather and Climate The Democratic Republic of the Congo is subject to earthquakes. An ear

It was more political than economics. Both Marcos and Mobutu Seseko were leaders who ruled with strong hands, often at the extent of human rights violations and civil rights repressions. But they would like to project the image of their countries to the world. particularly to their Western patrons and allies as peaceful, free and progressive. The case of the lesser known Big Lumper in Kuala Lumpur held in Malaysia featuring Muhammad Ali in a title defense against Joe Bugner was a different matter for I think it could qualify both as an attempt at showcasing the growing political as well as economic clout of Malaysia and at promoting international tourism through sports. Economically, I think the Thrilla in Manila did more for the Philippines than The Rumble since to this date, the Araneta Colesium is still remembered as The Site of that historic battle and a mall built in honor of Ali ( The Ali Mall ) still exists and is operating at the periphery of the decades old Araneta commercial area which has not only endured and survived the competition posed by the mushrooming commercial centers that sprouted since the 70s but has even flourished as it ages It was also Ali who started popularizing the holding of big time boxing in Vegas that was replicated with some success in Atlantic City in the East Coast area. But that didn't prevent him from also holding big time fights abroad as in the case of the three mentioned overseas bouts not to mention his exhibition bout vs. wrestler Antonio Inoki in Tokyo. An overseas big time fight involving Americans or an American versus another nationality would not be as viable and a sure smashing success now as before because there never emerged a boxer as great and popular as Ali. Leonards, Duran, Hearns, Hagler, Chavez, De la Hoya, Tyson, Holyfields, Lewis came and went but no one dared hold and sell big time fights involving them overseas. The nearest to a big time overseas fight that can be held today is if Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather agree to meet in a third country, possibly China or any of those oil-rich countries in the Middle East or any European capital. Or for any between the two to fight Cotto in Puerto Rico or Margarito in Mexico. But today's economics in view of America's flagging economy, dictates that big time fights to be held exclusively on USA shores, particularly Las Vegas. That would help the US economy but it would not help promote boxing internationally since big time fights would continue to be held outside the bigger and potentially richer boxing markets of Asia and Europe.
