Seoul, officially the Seoul Special City, is the capital and largest city of Republic of Korea. With a population of over 10 million, it is one of the world's largest cities. The Seoul National Capital Area, which includes the Incheon metropolis and most of Gyeonggi province, has 24.5 million inhabitants, and is the world's second largest metropolitan area. Almost half of South Korea's population live in the Seoul National Capital Area, and nearly a quarter in Seoul itself, making it the country's foremost economic, political, and cultural center. Seoul is located on the Han River in the center of the Korean Peninsula, and historically was settled in 18 B.C. when Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, established its capital in what is now south-east Seoul. The city then became the capital of Korea during the Joseon Dynasty and the Korean Empire. As the center of Korean history over the past millennia, the Seoul National Capital Area is home to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Changdeokgung, Hwaseong Fortress, Jongmyo Shrine and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. Seoul's influence in business, international trade, politics, technology, education and entertainment all contribute to its role as a prominent global city. It is considered to be an Alpha World City, ranking 9th in the 2008 Global Cities Index. Seoul is the iconic city of the Miracle on the Han River and hosted landmark international events such as the 1988 Summer Olympics and the 2002 FIFA World Cup and will be the host city of the November 2010 G-20 Summit. It is one of the world's top ten financial and commercial centers, home to some of the world's largest conglomerates such as Samsung, LG and Hyundai-Kia. Seoul was Asia's most expensive city to live in 2007, and the third most expensive city worldwide. In 2008, Seoul was named the world's sixth most economically powerful city by Forbes. com, ahead of Paris and Los Angeles. Seoul is the 2010 World Design Capital and has one of the world's most technologically advanced infrastructures. Ranked first on the Digital Opportunity Index, its Digital Media City is the world's first complex for high-tech technologies and a test-bed for futuristic IT and multimedia applications. Seoul is the world's first city to feature DMB, a digital mobile TV technology and WiBro, a wireless high-speed mobile internet service, as well as the world's fastest, most penetrated 100Mbps fibre-optic broadband network, which is being upgraded to 1Gbps by 2012. Seoul Station houses the 350 km/h KTX bullet train and the Seoul Subway is the third largest in the world, with over 2 billion passengers every year. Seoul is connected via AREX to Incheon International Airport, which has been rated as the world's best airport since 2005.

In Seoul, a Traditional House Adopts Modern Style
SEOUL, South Korea FROM the outside, the home of Simone Carena and Jihye Shin looks like a traditional Korean house, or hanok, with its carved wooden door and pagoda-style roof. But the cherry red Ducati parked out front hints at something unexpected inside: a modern, loftlike space in an eye-popping shade of bamboo green. ''We wanted a strong... More »
Pacific Crossing: Brahms by Way of Seoul
Western classical music has long flourished in Korea: where Western missionaries go, music tends to follow. In recent decades South Korean musicians like the Chung siblings -- the violinist Kyung-Wha Chung, the cellist Myung-Wha Chung and the pianist and conductor Myung-Whun Chung -- and more recently Hahn-Bin, a violinist, have led prominent... In Seoul, Green Transit Is Mayor’s Pet Project
SEOUL -- On a recent morning, the mayor of Seoul stopped by a local amusement park to inaugurate an electric tram system to ferry tourists around the grounds, replacing an old noisy one that belched exhaust. Music blared. A phalanx of TV crews trailed him. For some politicians, the event might have been an obligatory photo opportunity, something to... More »
Seoul Police Link 1,700 Pairs of Shoes to 2 Feet
SEOUL, South Korea -- In South Korea, where people often remove their shoes before entering homes, restaurants or funeral parlors, it is a nagging problem: people walking off with others' shoes, either by mistake or, sometimes, intentionally. Still, Detective Kim Jeong-gu's jaw dropped recently when he opened the warehouse of an ex-convict in Seoul... More »
N. Korea Threatens to Halt All Talks With Seoul
North Korea, denouncing South Korea for drawing up a contingency plan to deal with the potential collapse of the North's government, warned Friday that it would cut off all dialogue with the South and exclude it from all negotiations concerning the security of the Korean Peninsula. North Korea will also wage a ''pan-national holy war of retaliation... More »
Down Those Mean Streets of Seoul, on the Double
True to its title, ''The Chaser'' includes several hot pursuits. Forsaking cars and motorcycles, they involve men running up and down the steep, labyrinthine streets and alleys of the Mangwon neighborhood in western Seoul. When the quarry -- a frog-eyed serial killer whose preferred tools are a hammer and chisel -- is finally brought to ground, his... More »

Seoul Imposes Sanctions on N. Korea
South Korea imposed its first financial sanctions on North Korean companies, officials said Tuesday, taking a symbolic action that could anger the Communist regime while bolstering a joint front with the United States as the allies seek to punish the North for its recent nuclear test. It's bitter cold in January, so you will need a heavy winter coat, a scarf, gloves and some kind of hat. It's possible that you will see some snow. By May, it will be sunny and warm so you could be in shorts and a T-shirt at that time. For general tips I would recommend the following: 1) Try to adapt to Korean culture, don't expect Koreans to adapt to yours. 2) Try to learn some basic Korean language expressions. Never say to a Korean, "Don't you speak English?" 3) Be open-minded. 4) Avoid conversations about Japan. 5) Bring lots of money ---- Seoul's expensive.

There are several English-medium schools in Seoul but the tuition is outrageous! As far as I know, the annual tuition there is over $ 20,000. The English-medium schools are called an international school or a foreign school. The websites of the schools are below: http://www.sfs.or.kr/ http://www.siskorea.or.kr/ http://www.yisseoul.org/ There are a couple of private schools that have English immersion programs - the schools are more like bilingual schools. The annual tuition is about $ 5,000~ 6,000 which is much cheaper than international schools. http://www.younghoon.es.kr/ (Young-Hoon Elementary School) http://www.cheongwon-seoul.es.kr/ (I believe this school is cheaper than Young-Hoon) If you think the private schools are still out of your budget, you can always send your child to a public school(It's free but teaches almost every subject in Korean) or homeschool your child.

Take the bus. It leaves from Incheon directly to Cheongju bus terminal (located in the middle of the city) at these times: 06:30 07:30,50 08:30 09:00 10:00,30 12:00,30 13:30 14:00,30 15:30 16:30 17:00,30 18:00,30 19:00,30 20:00,40 21:40 22:40 The bus is luxury class, so the seats are spacious and it's a comfortable ride. Takes about 2.5 hours (almost exactly). Bus ticket cost is just under 20 bucks (or 20,000 won). Buy the bus ticket at a kiosk in Incheon right when you walk out of the gate. It's somewhere around gate B. Make sure you get Cheongju and not Chungju (cheongju = chung, like wang chung and Chungju=chew-ng joo, like charleston chew). Then walk outside and cross the street to an median that has a lot of bus stops. I think the cheongju bus stop is labeled D. I'm not sure if the buses are labeled in english or not, just ask the bus drivers that come around during your time of departure. that is the fastest and easiest way.

Seoul is generally colder than Tokyo in the winter. However, it's springtime and the weather has been pretty nice these days. The day highs of Seoul for this weekend will range from 19~24℃(66~75℉). The morning lows will be 5~10℃(42~50℉)so you may want to bring a light jacket and a sweater. The daytime almost feels like the summer but yesterday was pretty nippy because it rained. Seoul is 13℃ at the moment. http://web.kma.go.kr/eng/wea/wea_02_01.jsp?code1=11B10101
