The Yellow River or Huang He / Hwang Ho is the second-longest river in China and the sixth-longest in the world at 5,464 kilometers (3,398 mi). Originating in the Bayan Har Mountains in Qinghai Province in western China, it flows through nine provinces of China and empties into the Bohai Sea. The Yellow River basin has an east-west extent of 1900 km (1,180 mi) and a north-south extent of 1100 km (684 mi). Total basin area is 742,443 km² (290,520 mi²). The Yellow River is called "the cradle of Chinese civilization", as its basin is the birthplace of the northern Chinese civilizations and was the most prosperous region in early Chinese history. But frequent devastating flooding largely due to the elevated river bed in its lower course, has also earned it the unenviable name "China's Sorrow". Early Chinese literature refers to the Yellow River simply as He, the word that has come to mean simply "river" in modern language (in ancient times, however, 川 and 水 were used in the meaning "river"). The first appearance of the name "Yellow River" is in the Book of Han written in the Western Han dynasty (206 BC–AD 9). The name "Yellow River" describes the perennial ochre-yellow colour of the muddy water in the lower course of the river. The yellow color comes from loess suspended in the water. Sometimes the Yellow River is poetically called the "Muddy Flow". The Chinese idiom "when the Yellow River flows clear" is used to refer to an event that will never happen and is similar to the English expression "when pigs fly". In Qinghai, its Tibetan name is "river of the peacock" .

I thought the Yellow river was the oldest place for humans. The site where Shenyang and Fushun sit they have found signs of human living there 7200 years ago. I would think then from this that humans live by the Yellow River long before 4000 BC, this would put the humans on the Yellow River around 6000 years ago.

I'm giving you some useful imformation. Chinese is a kind of ideograph not phonogram. And Chinese is consisted of lines and other stuff. You can't know the pronunciation of a Chinese character. So, we use another way to express the pronunciation. It's Pinyin. Pinyin is a kind of pronunciation system. The basic rule of Pinyin is the same to english. Such as the alphabet. But the pronunciation is a little different to english. You english native speaker have some difficult to pronunciation it correctly. So sometime we add some letters into a Chinese-Pinyin-word in order to make you pronounce conveniently. Such as the word 北京. The Pinyin is Bei3 Jing1. But you have not studied Pinyin. You can't pronounce it. So we write it into beijing. And the word 黄河. The Pinyin is Huang2 He2. But the pronunciation is not hunghe. We change it into hwang ho which is not Pinyin but you can pronounce it correctly. Just make it more close to the pronunciation of Chinese. It doesn't make sense. And there is not a rule about how to add the letters. Just try to make the pronunciation. My english is not very good. Please don't laugh at me. If you have any question, you can send e-mails to me.
