If it's just a wax buildup from the wash any glass cleaner will do the trick.

If you go to stock car races on the dirt tracks the drivers have clear plastic sheets over thier face shields that they pull off when dirty while racing. Although its a good idea I prefer to see the drivers going around the track blinded by the dirt on their shields, more wrecks that way! Oh, nope not yet.

Yes you will definitely cause fine scratches on the paint. I'm in the Midwest too. Best thing to do in the Winter is just take it through the auto wash with the air drying. But if you don't like that idea, spray it down very thoroughly before taking it through auto wash. They never get cars clean enough anyways, even in the summer when the car isnt that dirty! In the summer when I wax my car, I always wash it by hand in my driveway, then take it to the auto wash and wash it again. That way I'm sure there's no dirt on it whatsoever. Can't have ANY dirt when you plan on waxing! Hope this helps.
