"Canon of Sherlock Holmes" Wikipedia (via DBPedia)

Traditionally, the canon of Sherlock Holmes consists of the fifty-six short stories and four novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In this context, the term "canon" is an attempt to distinguish between Doyle's original works and subsequent works by other authors using the same characters.

"Hound of the Baskervilles" come before the Return of Sherlock Holmes stories. Both in terms of when each was written and in the Holmes time-line Hound of the Baskervilles takes place in October of 1889, published in 1901-02. The Empty House takes place in April 1894, published in 1903. Many collections of Holmes stories often separates 2 of the Sherlock Holmes "novels" "Hound of the Baskervilles" and "Valley of Fear" in different sections from the single stories. There is no good reason to do this really except that it might look neater. However I should add that coming up with a definitive chronology of Holmes time-line has caused many a confusion and although the accepted chronology places House of the Baskervilles prior to The Empty House. There was one famous Holmes scholar, Ernest Bloomfield Zeisler, who placed Hound of the B. as taking place in 1900 and so maybe your book used his time-line to place the stories.

Well, Arthur Conan Doyle supposedly introduced some of his own character traits into Sherlock Holmes, but he definitely didn´t create Sherlock Holmes as a mirror of his own person. Sherlock Holmes' appearance and his strong ability to think in a logical and investigating way were based on one of Doyle's professors, when he was studying medicine at the university.
